CARLSBAD, Calif. July 13, 2010—NAMM, the 109-year-old trade association of the international music products industry, announced today that the Carlsbad Educational Foundation has joined the SupportMusic Coalition, a public service led by U.S.-based NAMM and MENC, the National Association for Music Education, that seeks to strengthen community commitment and support for quality music education in schools.
The coalition comprises more than 200 organizations, representing more than seven million concerned citizens, working to ensure that music and arts instruction are part of a complete education for all children. Since strengthening music education is a worldwide concern due to its many proven benefits for students, several international organizations also participate in the SupportMusic Coalition.
The mission of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation is to support the education of every child in the Carlsbad Unified School District by developing, conducting and financing innovative and quality programs and projects. The nonprofit organization was founded in 1983 by business and community leaders who recognized the vital need to support education in Carlsbad. Over the past 27 years, the foundation has contributed more than $4 million to the Carlsbad Unified School District in facilities fees and direct grants.
“Music education is critical to our 5,000 elementary school children in Carlsbad and to students throughout the nation,” said Valin Brown, chief executive officer of the Carlsbad Educational Foundation. “We know that high-quality music education offers a myriad of benefits for students and we are proud to help support weekly music instruction in our local community. Being involved with the SupportMusic Coalition helps broaden our efforts and network to a much larger audience. Together, by coordinating our efforts and advocacy work, we can offer a stronger voice for music education.”
The coalition invites all interested arts, parent, education, civic engagement and youth serving organizations to become affiliates. Affiliate organizations actively participate by contacting local, regional and state school officials, distributing pertinent information to other supporters in their communities as well as networking with other coalition members. Finally, they are able to add tools and materials to www.supportmusic.com that advance the group’s advocacy mission and messages.
