Many people in the Carlsbad community know the Carlsbad Educational Foundation raises private support and invests it back into the education of our youth through numerous targeted programs. We have remained steadfast to our core mission since the foundation began in 1983.
At the same time, CEF has grown over the decades, and we’ve really become something more. We have also become a direct service provider—the kind of organization that runs programs that directly and tangibly impact educational opportunities for local students.
Since 1990, CEF has co-managed a state-licensed child-care program, which came to be known as “Kids’ Care” by 2004. This program is offered year-round and helps provide a phenomenal service for working families that need high-quality child-care and enrichment for their students before and/or after school each day. Offering Kids’ Care year-round, as well as at one or more campuses in the summer, extends this value even further.
Beginning in 2009, CEF launched its “Summer Enrichment Program,” which offers dozens of half-day classes for elementary and middle school students. Over the past four years, this program has grown to now include 50 distinct classes that give kids opportunities to learn something new, engage a new topic or pursue future academic or career pathways. With at least half of our offerings debuting this year, there’s a terrific balance of programs for everyone.
Our newest program is our “Summer Academy” for high-schoolers. Now entering its second year, this program is something Carlsbad has never had access to before other than through enrollment in local community college classes. Designed for first-time credit, students can engage in intensive three- or six-week classes to earn five to 10 units of high school credit. Classes include PE, geometry, physics, U.S. and world history, and even SAT test prep.
In time, we believe our Summer Academy program can grow to become a strong part of what Carlsbad’s families come to rely on—an affordable solution to their educational needs offered by a trusted non-profit with some of the best teachers around. In other communities around California, education foundation-sponsored programs like this have created a regional draw attracting 1,000 or more students each summer.
Each of our programs—whether it’s K-5 Kids’ Care, K-8 Summer Enrichment or our High School Summer Academy—helps address the classic “summer brain drain,” which can occur when students are out of school. Better yet, with new scholarship funds recently raised by CEF, we now have the ability to help reduce tuition costs for income-eligible families to ensure that EVERY student who wants to attend these programs has a great opportunity!
Both as a fundraising/grant-making organization AND as a direct service provider, we’re proud of the impact Carlsbad Educational Foundation is making in the community and for our students. We hope you are too!
