CARLSBAD: Nonprofit offers discounted tickets to Legoland

A nonprofit in Carlsbad is selling $20 tickets to Legoland California, good only May 14, as part of a push to raise at least $100,000 for music programs in local schools.

The Carlsbad Educational Foundation is offering the sharply discounted tickets as part of its annual Celebrate Carlsbad fundraiser. Legoland tickets typically cost $69 for adults and $59 for kids.

Legoland will donate a portion of the proceeds from the ticket sales to the foundation, which uses the money to pay for music classes at Carlsbad Unified School District’s nine elementary schools, said Patty Johnson, the nonprofit’s director of development.

Since 2008, the event has raised about $360,000, Johnson said.

“Having an opportunity to support your local schools only makes your community better,” Johnson said. “At the same time, it allows admission to Legoland at such a discounted price.”

The tickets will be good only for the Celebrate Carlsbad event, which will run from 1 to about 9 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature fireworks and performances from students on the park’s Fun Town Stage from 3 to 5 p.m.

For the Carlsbad amusement park, the event offers a chance to help raise money for local schools, General Manager Peter Ronchetti said in a news release.

“Here at Legoland California, we believe strongly in the value of education and supporting our local community,” he said.

The foundation started the Celebrate Carlsbad event in 2008 by merging the Kids Are Worth A Million telethon with the community day fundraiser. The telethon was discontinued last year.

The education foundation was formed in 1983 to raise money for educational and enrichment programs for the nearly 11,000 students in the Carlsbad Unified School District. Since then, the foundation has raised nearly $5 million for local campuses.

Discounted tickets will not be available at the park and must be purchased in advance.

Johnson said the foundation is also selling 2,000 ticket upgrades for admission to Legoland’s Sea Life Aquarium. Upgrades are only available by calling the foundation’s office at 760-929-1555.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at any Carlsbad Unified campus, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, Carlsbad Visitors and Convention Bureau, U.S. Bank, Lola’s 7-Up Market and Deli, Sunwest Bank, Boys & Girls Clubs in Oceanside and Vista, and the Carlsbad Education Foundation’s office at 5631 Palmer Way, Suite L.
